A simple observation
On a humid Hong Kong morning in 2012, Jake and I first met and sat down over coffee. We didn’t know it then, but this was to be the first of what would end up as a full year of conversations. The subject was simple. Small and medium sized businesses often expose themselves to unnecessary risks by not using legal services. Technology and the Internet have transformed the way businesses operate, yet legal work continues to be conducted largely offline. We decided there should be a better way.
A better way
As we talked we got to thinking about why it is that companies hire attorneys. Nine times out of ten – it’s to do everything required to make a problem go away. Your customer is not paying, you call a lawyer. Your business partners want to take the business in a different direction, you need a lawyer.
But what if you could prevent these problems by installing certain procedures and having in place agreements that would make sure everyone is aware of their rights and obligations from the outset. Wouldn’t this avoid disputes and help to manage your business more effectively?
Unbundling the legal process
We asked businesses why they weren’t doing this. The reason was clear: they had no time, no money, and no clue how to start.
In fact this was hardly surprising. At a minimum – to help in this way, a lawyer would need to review the proposed terms, draft the contract, and spend time giving advice.
So our next question was “How could we ‘unbundle’ this process?”
Why couldn’t technology provide a business with the expertise it needs to solve routine legal tasks. What if lawyers only gave advice? This would take the mystery out of legal services, and give business owners the know-how and confidence to make business decisions that would protect and save significant time and money.
Legal services powered by technology
Central to unbundling this process was a complete rethink and redesign of a business’s legal workflow. The result is a drastic move away from the model of paying lawyers to review, draft documents and advise.
In its place, we built the unique SMART Law platform to take you through the process of creating even the most complex legal documents from start to finish. Our simple question-and-answer interface gathers key insights about your business and helps you generate highly-customised contracts that address your specific needs.
When you need legal advice – this is when we will connect you to our trusted network of lawyer partners, which includes leading global law firms. They will advise you, because that’s all that’s left to do.
We started Dragon Law with one simple goal: Making it easier to deal with legal needs, so businesses could grow. To do this, we unbundle legal work and we save our clients both time and money in the process.
